LWVBWC Supports our Local Immigrants

Published on 12/12/2025
At this time of increased ICE activity in our county, we remind you that LWVUS’s position is that immigration policies should promote the reunification of immediate families, meet economic, business, and employment needs, and be responsive to those facing political persecution or humanitarian crises.  The League policy position further affirms that all persons should receive fair treatment under the law and that the US must encourage new citizens’ participation in our democracy.   Click here to learn more.

Your local League Immigration Support Team suggests two ways to support immigrants in Whatcom County.

First: Contributions to local non-profit IRIS (Immigrant Resources & Immediate Support) pay for legal service and for meeting the basic needs of families who have had a member detained or deported.  Read more about IRIS here

Second: show your personal support for immigrants by displaying a sign in your window or yard.   Some League members are participating in the ‘Signs of Solidarity’ campaign.  Initiated by No Kings.org and Indivisible groups, this campaign urges businesses to show their solidarity with the immigrant community by posting a colorful sign in their window.

Local Signs of Solidarity coordinator Jenny Bardwell reports that over 250 businesses in the county have been contacted and many are saying YES, we welcome immigrants and will post a sign affirming our support.  We encourage League members to post a sign at your home or place of work.

Our LWVBWC Immigrant group designed a sign without the No Kings insignia if you prefer that image.  This sign can be found here: We stand with immigrant families
